Yoga Mat Spray - Blogmas Day 18

I have been asked about how I clean my yoga mats. I do not bring my mats in the bathtub and wash them like that - only because the company advised not too. It degrades the yoga mat. I also do not use yoga mat wipes because I am trying to be all green and sustainable. The would mean throwing out a few wipes a week!

I have always washed my yoga mats using my own spray. I have found a variety of homemade sprays out there but this is the finalized version of the spray I currently use. I spray this homemade concoction and wipe using a towel or a reusable napkin. Then, let it hang on something to dry. I would hang it over my porch in the sun, not longer than 15 minutes. If you have a biodegradable mat, leaving it in the sun is not a good idea.

Yoga Mat Spray Recipe
  • spray bottle
  • clean water (distilled, Reverse Osmosis, whatever "clean" means to you. )
  • Alcohol-Free Witch Hazel
  • Essential Oils (tea tree - for cleaning, lavender, rosemary, lemon, or eucalyptus - for the good smells)
  • sage & crystal quartz (for those spiritual people out there)
  1. Make sure your spray bottle is clean before using.
  2. Fill up your spray bottle 3/4 of the way with clean water.
  3. Fill the rest of the spray bottle with your Witch Hazel, leaving room for a few drops of your essential oils.
  4. Drop in your oils. I used approximately five drops of tea tree and lavender.
  5. Shake, dance, and smell. If it is too strong of one essential oil, add the other. Be careful because this stuff is strong!
  6. Optional: Put in your dried sage. Meditate and cleanse your quartz before placing it in the mix. Imagine glowing light when placing your quartz in the liquid.
